How can a single word bring with it the many emotions of joy, love, hate, anger, fear, and saddness? The titile of this introductory section takes its name from a poster of the same title created by Lejaren A. Hiller in 1945. The poster calls upon America's women to write to their loved ones serving in the American armed forces during World War II.

The exhibits that follow encourages the users of this site to explore the issues of gender, the homefront, and the idea of the soldier during the World War II. World War II is often written from the point of view of those nations who were allies, enemies, and their charismatic leaders that held power. However, the exhibits ask the readers to rethink their previous conceptions of World War II through these letters. Written between 1938 to 1945, Emmett Boyd and Jane Melchior Boyd shared their greatest fears, disappointments, hopes, and deep affection for one another.
